Chicken Coop Design Elements

By Kerry Mundt of Royal Rooster - Mobile Chicken Coops

So you're about to invest a reasonable amount of money on a new chicken coop for your backyard, but you want to make sure you're choosing the best designed coop. This article briefly discusses some important elements of design to consider when choosing your new pre-made coop or DIY coop design. If you’ve never had chickens in your backyard before it really pays to undertake a little bit of research to ensure your chickens will be happy with their new homes for years to come.

Summer Ventilation

When building or buying a chicken coop, it is really important that the coop is designed with adequate ventilation for your chickens. In warmer climates, where summers can be so extreme that chickens perish in the heat, having adequate ventilation is very important. Be careful of those pre-made coops on the market that are built with an enclosed housing section with no ventilation. ‘Royal Rooster’ chicken coops are one of the few that provide such a ventilation system, allowing air to flow beneath the perches in the housing section, thereby reducing the heat that builds up in summertime.

Rain & Wind Protection

Regardless of where you live, protection from wet weather is something that you need to consider in the design of your coop. Chickens don’t particularly like to be wet in cold weather, so a housing section that has a roof and side walls is necessary. When purchasing a grain feeder, also keep in mind that one with a rain shield of some sort will be necessary if your feeder is to be stored in the run section of your coop. Wet grain will soon get your feeder blocked up, which will require constant attention in wet weather.

Coop mobility

Some of the chicken coops on the market and plans available, offer the benefit of wheels. While you could keep chickens in a traditional chicken run that is fixed to one location in your backyard, chickens' excrement can be so heavy that the nitrogen content can become so toxic that nothing will grow on the soil. A coop that features wheels or two sets of handles on either end, allows you to position the coop in many different areas in your backyard and ideally over a garden bed. The chickens will do wonders for your garden by depositing manure and removing all sorts of weeds, bugs and insects that they can find. Once you move your coop, you’ll have a bug free, mature rich area to plant your next crop of vegetables.
